Minutely and for minutes, the camera observes in static shots the daily routine of the widowed housewife and mother Jeanne Dielman (Delphine Seyrig): tidying up, dusting, washing up, cooking dinner. In the afternoon, she receives elderly gentlemen. Even this casual prostitution, hidden from the camera's view, occupies a fixed place in the precise, unchanging course of the day. Barely perceptibly at first, the rigid structures are shaken up by subtle omissions; the escalation is inevitable. (mg)
